According to a recently-released report from network testing company RootMetrics, T-Mobile US has managed to overtake Sprint as the country’s number 3 cell network provider when it comes to overall performance.  This indicates that there has been a reversal from the last report that was released by RootMetrics, which covered the second half of last year.

T Mobile Ranks Number Three

Verizon Wireless also made headlines in that it not only outpaced all of its competitors when it came to overall performance ratings; it also managed to beat rival network provider AT&T Mobility when it came to comparing national network speeds. However, this can more than likely be attributed to the network provider’s rapid deployment of AWS spectrum for its LTE services.

In order to compile the latest test results, RootMetrics drove close to 235,000 miles across the country in order to test performance while driving. Testing also had to be performed at various stationary outdoor venues as well as at almost 6,500 indoor locations. More than 5.5 million total samples were collected in order for RootMetrics to compile the most recent report.

Although T-Mobile finished last in five out of six categories in the 2013 report, figures in the most recent one showed that T-Mobile surpassed Sprint to finish in third place in four of the categories. With regards to the metro-area testing that was done, T-Mobile received 169 first-place awards or ties, which was substantially more than their more modest 60 in the previous report.

In a recent interview that took place between the CEO of RootMetrics, Bill Moore, and FierceWireless, Moore went on to state that T-Mobile’s speedy deployment of LTE or 4G technology was a major contributing factor that assisted the company in its climb up the rankings. However, he did go on to note that both T-Mobile and Sprint are still in the development and construction stages of their LTE deployments. He stated the following in this regard, “We anticipate we will continue to see improvement in both cases.”

Moore went on to mention the fact that in areas where Sprint Spark had been implemented, RootMetrics is seeing strong network speeds. He went on to refer to Sprint as “a bit of a dark horse” and also stated that it would be in the best interests of the carrier if they were to attract more customers, as this would enable the company to “get on the network to enjoy the increased speeds that their LTE network is trying to put out there.”

Moore also mentioned that at present, the US wireless market is competitive. “I don’t think the race is over. The one constant here in change,” he said.
