T-Mobile has continued its push to increase the quality and reach of its network performance and recently, the carrier announced that it would be expanding its wideband LTE service offering into Boston as well. The upgrade would provide increased network speeds of as much as 50%, with some subscribers witnessing speeds of as high as 94 megabits per second.

T Mobile Expands LTE ServiceThe most recent RootMetrics network report ranked T-Mobile US’ LTE network in the Boston area at number 3 in overall performance behind Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility. RootMetrics also noted that T-Mobile’s network provided the area’s highest overall network speed, with downloads reaching 17.7 Mbps – a notable improvement over the 15.5 Mbps recorded previously.

T-Mobile has also noted that all LTE-equipped devices will experience an increase in speed, with those that support category four LTE being able to make the most of the available wideband spectrum. At present, Verizon Wireless provides up to 40 MHz of spectrum support in Boston by means of its 700 MHz and 1.1/2.1 GHz spectrum holdings – although it supports a customer base that is more than twice the size of that of T-Mobile US.

RootMetrics made mention of the fact that while Verizon Wireless tied with AT&T Mobility when it came to providing the best overall performance in Boston, its overall network speed ranked third behind that of AT&T Mobility and T-Mobile US. Verizon’s network also doesn’t allow for a continuous 40 MHz channel, and as a result, customers only have access to one of the bands at a time. Carriers are however working to deploy what is known as aggregation technology, which will enable them to combine various spectrum bands in a bid to support wider LTE channels.

Previously, T-Mobile had expanded its spectrum support in numerous markets, among them Atlanta, Los Angeles and San Francisco and has plans to cover at least 26 more markets by the end of this year. The carrier’s current LTE network provides coverage to more than 250 million potential clients throughout the country and it plans to increase this to 280 million by the middle of next year and 300 million by the end of 2015.

The expanded coverage will result from the use of 700 MHz spectrum assets that T-Mobile US has recently started aggregating, as well as from continued re-farming of its 1.9 GHz spectrum that is currently being used to support legacy 2G and 3G services for the LTE network.

T-Mobile US will also be taking part in the current Auction 97 proceeding, which has managed to generate more than $24 billion in total potential winning auction bids. The auction includes 50 MHz of paired spectrum in the 1.7/2.1 GHz band.

Winning bidders in the auction will not be released in any way until the auction comes to a close.
